Arthur Rackham

Arthur Rackham is a famous late 19th to early 20th Century illustrator, he is considered to be a prime example of the Golden Age of british book illustration. Rackham is well known for his illustrations in numerous fairy tale stories, Rip Van Wrinkle, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and the Brother's Grimm fairy tales are some of those stories.

I chose Arthur Rackham's Rip Van Wrinkle because, in my opinion, this work best shows what intrigues me about his style, the extreme detail to fine lines, the color washes and both their uses to imbue motion and emotion in the subject. Its not just an image that you can look at its an image with a feeling to it too. The change in lights and darks, and prominent lines created by the man's limbs the view is inevitably drawn from the stormy background to the emotional face of the figure. This piece connects to  painting via the color washes that give the background its stormy tint.
